Research and professional interests

  • The mathematical and pedagogical content knowledge development of elementary and middle pre-service and in-service teachers, especially within Title I schools
  • How their mentors influence/impact this development
  • Pre-school interactions with manipulatives to promote mathematical understanding
  • Building and connecting mathematical concepts through inquiry-based and technology-rich explorations.

 I am also the sponsor of the Student National Education Association. I have conducted professional development workshops on problem solving and use of manipulatives in mathematics instruction.

Awards and honors

  • 2009    Nomination for “Dissertation of the Year” award in the department of Teaching, Learning, and Culture at Texas A&M University. Currently, publications from my dissertation include: one peer-reviewed article, one research brief, and one book chapter. Currently, a second article is being revised for publication. All three articles have been presented at national conferences. My current research agenda at MSU is based on several of my dissertation ideas, methodology and research results.
  • 2009    Childhood Education and Family Studies “Above and Beyond” award. This award was for positive impact, attitude, willingness to assist others and commitment to the Elementary Education program and department of Childhood Education and Family Studies.
