Dr. Mirza is very much interested in studying the ecology of useful soil microorganisms’ in different ecosystems using advanced molecular techniques. Specifically, his research includes studying: (i) ecology of symbiotic and free-living nitrogen fixing microorganisms in soil and the rhizosphere of the host and non-host plants, (ii) the impact of land use changes on the structural and functional microbial communities involved in N cycling, and (iii) characterization of the functional microbial communities involved in the transformations of both natural and man-made toxic environmental contaminants (arsenic and trichloroethene).
